A cascade happens when clearing one match causes blocks to fall into a new match, which clears and causes another fall, and so on. In Cascade Puzzle a combo is a single clear of many blocks at once, while a chain is a sequence of separate clears where each one is caused by the fall from the previous. Chains are worth more than combos, and unlike combos they can be planned several steps ahead.

Why gravity creates cascades

When a match clears, the game does not refill the gap from the top. Everything above simply falls straight down. That single rule is what makes cascades possible: a clear low in a column rearranges every block above it at once, and rearranged blocks frequently land in lines you never explicitly built.

The consequence is that a clear near the bottom of a tall column is worth far more than the same clear near the top. Clearing at the bottom moves many blocks; clearing at the top moves none.

Combo vs. chain — the distinction that matters

Combo
One clear that removes more than the minimum three blocks — a line of five, or a swap that completes a row and a column simultaneously. It all happens in a single step.
Chain
Several separate clears in sequence, where each clear after the first is caused by blocks falling from the one before. The chain counter starts at x2 on the first linked clear and climbs by one for each additional link.

The practical difference: a combo is decided entirely by the swap you make right now, whereas a chain is decided by the shape you built over previous moves. This is why chains are the skill ceiling of the game and why versus mode rewards them so heavily.

How to build a chain on purpose

The reliable recipe is to create a pending match — two blocks of the same type that are not yet in a line, positioned so that a fall will complete them — and then trigger a clear underneath it.

  1. Find two same-type blocks stacked in one column, or sitting one row apart in neighbouring columns.
  2. Put a third block of that type directly above them, separated by exactly the blocks you are about to clear.
  3. Clear those separating blocks. The third block falls onto the pair and completes the line without you spending a move on it.

Reading a board for cascade potential

Before your first swap, scan for these patterns. They are the ones that pay:

  • Vertical pairs — two of the same type stacked. Every vertical pair is a chain waiting for a third block to drop onto it.
  • Colour columns — a column carrying three or more of one type at different heights. Clearing anything beneath it usually collapses several into a line.
  • Split pairs — two same-type blocks in adjacent columns at different heights. Clear under the higher one and they level out.
  • Tall stacks — the taller the column, the more blocks a single low clear rearranges. Prioritise clearing under the tallest stack on the board.

Common cascade mistakes

  • Clearing top-down. Taking the easy match at the top of a stack destroys the blocks you needed as chain fuel and moves nothing.
  • Breaking your own pending match. Before you swap, check that the pair you are relying on is not one of the two blocks you are about to move.
  • Treating a big combo as a win. Clearing eight blocks in one swap feels good, but if it strands two blocks in opposite corners with one move left, it lost you the level.
  • Forgetting that the board must end empty. Plan the last two moves first on tight levels — the endgame is where move limits actually bite.
